My First Bake

Chocolate Cake For Loved One

I want to share with you how I first started my baking journey and specifically the first cake I ever baked.

My husband and I were celebrating our first wedding anniversary. I wanted to do something special for him, something he probably would not expect from me! I knew he had a sweet tooth so I hit on the idea of baking him a cake.

At the time I had never baked a cake before, so I was not 100% sure how this would turn out. Would it be a fantastic success or a disastrous failure!

Thankfully my Mother-in-law had a simple chocolate cake recipe which she was nice enough to share with me.

I gathered all my ingredients and baking tools needed, making sure I have everything ready. I wanted to be prepared! I was excited but nervous as I really wanted to pull this off.

I followed the step-by-step guide for the mixture. To be honest, at that time I was not sure if what I ended up with was correct or not, either way, I put it into the oven to bake and I waited. I kept peering into the oven to see what was happening. Watching my first ever cake rise slowly was exciting at the time.

I had set a timer as instructed and when it went off I removed the cake from the oven. It looks good, well it looked like a cake. It smelt like a cake too, so I was guessing I was on the right track.

I let it cool on a wire-rack before cutting it in half down the middle.

The recipe came with a chocolate fudge filling which again was something new to me. I mixed it up and spread it on the 2 halves of the cake.

For the frosting, I whipped up some vanilla buttercream using a recipe I found in the book. Then, I sprinkled my cake with chocolate sprinkles and thin slices of strawberries that I stick around the cake. Lastly, I added two giant strawberries on the top as a symbol of our two hearts being together. Though I was not sure if he got the “symbolism” part!

I remember his face when I presented him this cake. He looks happy and partly surprised (he probably be thinking is this edible?). I watched him closely and tried to read his face while he’s eating. I was impatient from his reaction, thankfully when I was about to confront him whether he likes it or not, he stood up and went for a second slice. He then said to me, this is amazing! Phew! I felt relieved, like a huge weight off my shoulder (such a raw feeling back then, trying to impress my husband). Today, my husband is my biggest fan in my baking adventure.

This is how my baking experience started. It’s what started me on my baking journey and I have never looked back.

Over the years I have made some changes and tweaks to the recipe. Though it’s still simple and a great cake for beginners.

One last thing I want to mention, have you seen my logo? I designed it based on this very first cake – cool hay 🙂
